Occupation & Trauma: Expanding Occupational Therapy Practice

This two-day workshop will explore the nature and prevalence of trauma and resulting impacts, introduce and utilize an occupational therapy trauma intervention framework, and present holistic practice methods that include families and support networks.

The workshop will use both small and large group learning methods, and participants will have the opportunity to discuss and share their own practice experiences.

Goals and Learning Objectives:

  1. Develop a working knowledge of trauma and its impact on daily life;
  2. Increase understanding of the exposures for a variety of clients who experience or witness trauma, including first responders, military personnel, and Veterans;
  3. Utilize an evidence-informed occupational therapy trauma intervention framework;
  4. Expand consideration of the impact of trauma on families and support networks;
  5. Explore opportunities for growth in occupational therapy practice.

Day 1:

  • Defining trauma: prevalence, diagnoses, key terms
  • Current trauma interventions and approaches
  • Occupational therapy trauma intervention framework

Day 2:

  • Occupational therapy trauma intervention framework
  • Resilience and post-traumatic growth
  • Including families and support networks
  • Growth of occupational therapy practice in this area

Megan Edgelow, MSc(RHBS), OT Reg. (Ont.)

 

 

 

 

 

Megan is a Lecturer in the School of Rehabilitation Therapy at Queen’s University. She is currently completing her Doctorate of Education (EdD) at Western University. Her current clinical work and research includes military, Veteran, and public safety personnel mental health and occupational engagement.

 

Heidi Cramm, PhD, OT Reg. (Ont.)

 

 

 

 

 

Heidi is an Assistant Professor in the School of Rehabilitation Therapy at Queen’s University, Associate Scientist, Canadian Institute for Military and Veteran Health Research (CIMVHR), and Associate Director, Canadian Institute for Public Safety Research & Treatment (CIPSRT). Her program of research focuses on military family health, Veteran transition, public safety personnel health, trauma and mental health.

  • Cancellations received 60-45 business days prior to the event will be provided a full fee refund, however subject to an administrative fee of $25.00
  • Cancellations received 45-30 business days prior to the event will be provided a 75% fee refund plus an administrative fee of $25.00
  • Cancellations received 30-15 business days prior to the event will be provided a 50% fee refund plus an administrative fee of $25.00
  • Cancellations received 14-0 business days prior to the event are not eligible for a fee refund.
